This is an understatement concerning Georgia’s roads, they are the smoothest and best maintained compared to surrounding States.

One of the most picturesque motorcycle routes in Georgia is the Cherohala Skyway. This 52-mile stretch winds through the Appalachian Mountains, connecting Tellico Plains, Tennessee, and Robbinsville, North Carolina. Although it’s not entirely in Georgia, it’s a must-ride for any regional biker. This roadway was completed in 1996 after 34 years of construction. Obviously, based on those stats this roadway was a challenge to construct due to the extreme terrain and rock formations encountered during construction.

The scenery changes as you ascend from the foothills to the higher elevations. The dense forest gives way to vast panoramas of rolling hills and valleys. The views of the Smokey Mountains and Tellico River from the overlooks are spectacular.
The Cherohala Skyway’s twists and turns seamlessly followed the natural terrain, revealing fresh, awe-inspiring views at every curve. You must make the detour to Bald River Falls, a hidden gem surrounded by mossy rocks, which eventually leads to the high overlook at 5,400 feet, offering a 360-degree vista of the Appalachians.
Descending towards Robbinsville, the road seems to have endless sweeping curves. The excitement of leaning into each turn was matched only by the natural beauty of the surroundings.

Although this ride does not offer the heart-pounding excitement that some of the other rides offer it is still a great time and a great journey.

The Richard B. Russell Scenic Highway: Alpine Adventure
The Richard B. Russell Scenic Highway, also known as Georgia State Route 348, is a hidden gem that winds through the Chattahoochee National Forest. It offers a taste of the Alps in the heart of Georgia. This motorcycle route starts in Helen, GA, and ends in Dahlonega.
Leaving Helen, GA onto the Richard B. Russell Scenic Highway, the road immediately began to wind and twist, taking me through dense forests and past cascading waterfalls. The scent of pine trees filled the air, and the sound of my motorcycle echoed through the secluded forest.
It is a challenging roadway with great scenery. At every bend, there was something new to discover – a hidden waterfall, a breathtaking view, or a mountain stream.
One of the highlights of the ride was reaching the Brasstown Bald Visitor Center, the highest point in Georgia. From there, I had a panoramic view of the surrounding mountains, and I could see for miles in every direction. It was an awe-inspiring view.
Descending from the heights, the road led me through charming mountain communities like Suches and Dahlonega. Each town had its own unique charm and offered a glimpse into the mountain way of life.

– Safety First: Always wear a helmet and protective gear. I personally wear gloves with knuckle protection, long-sleeved jackets or coats according to the weather with armor inserts for shoulders, back, and elbows. I also wear protective pants with armor inserts at the hips and knees. I rode motocross for years with my four boys, safety equipment is a staple in that sport, and so should it be for riding on the road. I respect everyone’s decision regarding what they want to wear when riding, these are strictly my opinions from what I have experienced in the past.
– Obey traffic rules and speed limits.
– Stay alert and avoid distractions. Head on a swivel and eyes straight ahead. We all know it is the drivers around us that pose the greatest threat, and anticipate the unimaginable it’s not “if” it happens it is always “when” it happens.
– Check your motorcycle’s brakes and tires before each ride. Checking the tire pressure is a must when riding these routes. The stress the tires experience on some of these rides is only possible by maintaining the tire manufacturer’s suggested air pressure within a few pounds based on preference and grip.
– Ride within your skill level and comfort zone.
